Since the introduction of the General Binding Rules on the 1st of January 2015, the legislative environment around off-mains sewage systems has become more complex. This has been driven by the Environment Agency. However, what we have seen is a lot of confusion arising around what these rules are and what they mean for the operator of a small sewage system. This has not been helped by the Environment Agency themselves who regularly issue conflicting and confusing guidance. What we have tried to do with the following blog posts is give some straight answers to the main concerns and questions we have encountered. Please see below for the articles we have written. If you are struggling to find the information you want, please do not hesitate to let us know.

If you have any feedback on any of our blog articles or further questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. We appreciate the complexity of the situation and are happy to help. Please note that if any company is contradicting the information presented here then you should get independent advice as it is highly likely to be incorrect. We can help and put you in the direction of the supporting regulations or you can contact the Environment Agency directly. If you contact the Environment Agency directly please ask to speak to a member of the Water Quality team. We have found that other departments have not always had the necessary training to deal with specific requests and tend to tell you what you want or expect to hear to get you off of the phone.

New Forest Philosophy

As we have said Homeseptic is based in the New Forest. A great location in between the cities of Southampton, Salisbury, and Bournemouth. We are a group of good friends who grew up together in the area.  Individually we all have grown tired of the way other Drainage firms are run. As a result, this is why we set up Homeseptic. We want to actually put the customer first and turn up to do a great job that we can be proud of. Unfortunately, this is not the case in the market, with most companies pressuring their workers to sell unnecessary work on a visit. Due to this, we offer upfront quotations with any variations discussed before we start work. We are honest hard working professionals, which we hope you will agree with. As a result, it will certainly not turn up in flash sales vehicles and give you a load of chat and then do a terrible job. Our team will come with the job in mind and the aim of giving you the best value we can in order to facilitate a quality installation.

We also cover all of Hampshire, West Sussex, Dorset, Somerset, and Wiltshire. Please get in touch and see what you think. We offer free quote visits for all potential installations, so even if you just want to get an idea of the costs involved, we can help. At the point of the quote visit, you will meet the engineer who would carry out the installation. Once the quote is generated you will be given the engineer’s personal number so you can chat through any issues or questions directly with them. This also means that if there are any post-installation issues you can directly contact the engineer.

If you would like to find out more about us, please visit our About page. As always if you have any questions just let us know and we will be happy to help. We are extremely busy but we endeavour to get back to everyone. If there is something you feel we have got wrong please let us know and we will amend or get back to you.

We are specialists in the installation, surveying, maintenance and repair or Septic Tanks, Sewage Treatment Plants, Soakaways and Drainage Fields. We do not currently offer an emptying service. Since 2015 a new body of regulation has come into force which has changed the face of the private drainage sector. As an operator you are responsible for compliance. We would strongly advise getting up to date with the latest requirements and regulations. The most urgent piece of change concerns discharges to ditches, streams and surface water, this element is commonly known as the 2020 legislation. Top line, if you have a septic tank you cannot legally discharge to a ditch, stream, river or other form of surface water.

The 2020 piece is that this was the deadline to replace your Septic tank with a Sewage Treatment Plant set out in the 2015 General Binding Rules. As with everything concerning the Environment Agencies permitting team this was appallingly advertised and there is little coherent and informed  interaction to have with them. If you are concerned about your compliance with the legislation please give us a call and we can talk to you in more detail about your specific detail. You can also contact the Environment Agency if you enjoy having your time wasted and life force drained.

The 2015 General Binding Rules also include specific regulations concerning discharges into the ground. These are less pressing and will likely only become relevant to you when you look to sell your property. The key variable is when you had the system installed or when it was originally installed. If the discharge was in place before 1983 and is working then you are unlikely to have an issue.
